Welcome Letter From Our Program Director

Welcome to Hackensack Emergency Medicine

It is a distinct privilege to welcome you to the Hackensack University Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency. Our three-year, ACGME-accredited program is designed to develop our residents across three professional pillars: clinical excellence, intellectual rigor, and visionary leadership. Our mission is to graduate exceptional healers—physicians whose technical mastery and clinical acumen are matched by their humility and compassion at the bedside.

Unrivaled Clinical Depth

Our status as the #1 hospital and busiest emergency department in the New York Metro Area as well as the flagship referral center for an 18-hospital network combine to create an exceptionally busy and high-acuity, tertiary care training environment. Here, residency is not just about volume; it is about the complexity of the pathology. Under a model of graduated autonomy, our residents manage an extraordinarily ill patient population including transplant recipients, oncologic emergencies, high-mechanism traumas and patients on advanced cardiac devices. We pride ourselves on challenging the boundaries of the specialty, routinely initiating cutting-edge resuscitative therapies—including extracorporeal support (ECMO)—directly from the ED.

A Culture of Intellectual Transformation

Residency training is a time of transition from an instructor-dependent educational model, to one which requires candid self-assessment of gaps in expertise, filled by the relentless pursuit of an ever changing body of knowledge to take the best care of your next patient.  Grounded in adult learning theory and designed to foster engagement rather than passive participation, our learner-centric didactic curriculum nurtures that transformation by intersecting clinically relevant content with interactive teaching methods including case-based discussions, weekly in-situ simulation, and team-based learning.  We create an environment where curiosity is expected and diverse perspectives are valued. Our residents are not merely consumers of knowledge; they are contributors to a shared academic mission.

Inquiry & Mentorship

Scholarly inquiry is woven into the fabric of our program. Our residents benefit from the direct mentorship of a deeply invested faculty that includes fellowship-trained experts across the breadth of emergency medicine—medical toxicology, critical care, quantitative research, pediatric emergency medicine, ultrasound, and EMS—ensuring exposure to the full scope and future of our specialty.  Our dedicated departmental informatics team facilitates access to and interpretation of clinical data, removing common barriers to scholarship and promoting a culture of data-driven operational, quality and educational innovation. In close collaboration with their mentors, our residents routinely transform their ideas into impactful research or systems-level improvements and present their work on a national stage.

Leading the Future of the Specialty

Emergency physicians are uniquely positioned to lead—at the bedside, within health systems, and across communities. From the earliest days of training, we cultivate accountability, professionalism, and the commitment to service that is required for the highest levels of practice. Whether your future lies in academic medicine, sub-specialty fellowship, or health administration, we leverage our extensive alumni and professional network to launch your career.

We are proud of the collegial, mission-driven community we have built. We invite you to explore our program and join us in shaping the future of emergency medicine.
